How to choose and promote products

You are shopping online? What are your reasons?

Let's see one example. I need new graphic card for my PC. First, I will check graphic cards reviews to find one or two what are suitable according to perfomance and price.

I want to save. First what I will do is to check prices at my local shops, visiting theirs web sites. Then, I am comparing prices. It is still looking expensive, I am going to find some coupons or discounts.

Then I landed to your page where some coupon is offered. So, clicking on your affiliate link I am redirected to well known online shop. Savings (coupons) and trust (well known merchants) is benefit for me, buyer. If you give (present) me that benefit, I will buy (go to merchant site) from your site using your affiliate link.

In this example above, I (buyer) was looking for the best price. In some other example, visitor can buy only because he is living in small place without local computer shops. Or, only merchant you are promoting have this kind of (newest) graphic card at that time.

Choosing product or group of product is very important. Promoted product simply must match theme of your site. It is recommended that you start research about products fitting your site while you are building that site, so you can better match product(s) with theme. Or, you can first find products and build site around them.

Where to find product to promote?

Well, there are merchants and "merchants". You need to check for merchant name using search engines and forums to be sure there are no negative experiences. You need to check prices of same product(s) and compare. Sometime, higher price means faster delivery or additional benefit for buyer, this must be presented to visitor. To find suitable product, it is the best to join to an affiliate network. That is better explained in Affiliate programs guide (next).

How to promote a product?

There are many ways to promote product and many ways are used. Instead of promoting some product only (merchant), promote your site (page) with that product and a few similar. On that page, use some description, your (good) "experience" with that product(s). Maybe visitor with little different taste ends buying similar product. Whatever method you are using to get visitors, good landing page is essential.

Maybe some affiliates will not agree with this, but it is the fact, when you have a name and a trusted site, you will get more sales from returned visitors then from hit&go visitors. So, promote your site, not product.

Product price

This is one of important factors. If product price is lower than in local shops, that is good. If you know your visitors, and sell them reasonable priced product, that is good. If you are trying to sell expensive watch to poor student, that is not good. Lower price wins. Product with lower price and product your visitors are looking for, is the winner.

Coupons, bargains

I can save? Where? Show me... Always take a look at current promotions, and push coupons or promotion where they are visible. Add expiration date, on that way that visitor simply must go there before promotion ended. Listing newest discounts and coupons, you can "catch" regular online buyers, they will visit your site, looking for newest discount, before any online shopping.

What is Pre-selling?

Pre-selling is just that what you need to do (as affiliate) on your site. You simply must to synchronize your tactic with merchant. You are pre-selling that product, and merchant must close that sale. So, visitor, when leaving your site, clicking on affiliate link, must be prepared for merchant site. What means, visitor already knows what he could expect on merchant site.

Your pre-selling tactic depends of merchant landing page. If that page (or site) is "made to sell", you can send visitor there without too much "heating". In other cases, you need to add what you think that is lacking there (more details, experience, additional benefits)
